The story
On November 6, 1999, at Gulfstream Park, Anees came from last to first in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1). Sent off at 30–1 with Gary Stevens up for trainer Alex Hassinger Jr., he won by 2½ lengths over Chief Seattle and High Yield, paid $62.60, and stopped the clock in 1:42.29 for 1 1/16 miles on dirt.
That performance earned him the 1999 Eclipse Award as American Champion Two-Year-Old Colt. A bay son of Unbridled — the 1990 Kentucky Derby and Breeders’ Cup Classic winner — out of Ivory Idol, by Alydar, he was bred in Kentucky by Farfellow Farms and raced for Prince Ahmed bin Salman’s Thoroughbred Corporation.
At three he finished 13th in the 2000 Kentucky Derby. He later retired to stud at Mill Ridge Farm near Lexington — the Kentucky farm our neighborhood’s name looks back to.
