The story
Menow raced for Hal Price Headley’s Beaumont Farm. He was named 1937’s champion two-year-old and finished fourth in the 1938 Kentucky Derby and third in the Preakness. He is buried at Mill Ridge Farm in Lexington, built on land from Beaumont Farm — a direct link to the farm our neighborhood is named for.
His name is pronounced “mee-now.” Headley named him after his daughter Alice — later Alice Headley Chandler, founder of Mill Ridge Farm — who would stamp and squeal “Me, now; me, now!” when she wanted his attention, including when he came home and kissed her mother first. Later accounts also say the Headley children called out “Me now!” and some of Menow’s offspring carried the joke in their names, including Askmenow and Trymenow.
The naming story was reported in TIME magazine, July 11, 1938.
Here at home, Menow Way is our entry road and gate. From there, turn left onto Tiago Lane or right onto Anees Lane.
