The story
Tiago was bred and owned by Jerry and Ann Moss and trained by John Shirreffs — the same team behind 2005 Kentucky Derby winner Giacomo. Out of the same mare, Set Them Free, he was Giacomo’s half-brother (by Pleasant Tap). Mill Ridge Farm in Lexington foaled and raised both colts; Set Them Free lived out her life there and is buried on the farm. The Mosses named him for the son of singer Sergio Mendes; Tiago and Giacomo are Portuguese and Italian forms of “James.”
On April 7, 2007, at 29–1, Tiago won the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby with Mike Smith up — Smith’s first ride on him — then ran seventh in the Kentucky Derby and third in the Belmont Stakes behind Rags to Riches and Curlin.
That summer and fall he added the Swaps Stakes and the Goodwood Breeders’ Cup Handicap (as the only three-year-old against older horses), then the 2008 Oaklawn Handicap, and finished third in the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Classic. He earned more than $2.3 million.
